Fresh Catch

There are about three million lobster traps in Maine’s waters and it is estimated that more than 100,000 are lost each year. Lost or abandoned fishing gear plague coastal waters around the globe putting pressure on a number of already stressed ocean populations. The Fresh Catch series is conceived from abandoned lobster traps salvaged off the coast of Maine. The traps are collected by hand from tidal coves where abandoned fishing gear accumulates in large quantities. They are carefully deconstructed, organically rearranged and welded back together to create unique sculptural pieces of furniture. This project seeks to address the ongoing dilemma of ocean waste by removing debris from our coastal shores and transforming it into one-of-a-kind objects. There are about three million lobster traps in Maine’s waters and it is estimated that more than 100,000 are lost each year.
